Upper Hideout

The Upper Hideout is nestled amid a grove of tall pines up in the Big Horn Mountains. Because of the remote and high altitude location (approximately 8,400 ft elevation), it is accessible by horseback or 4x4 truck only after the snow pack has gone away, usually not until mid June. Visitors and supplies are packed in and out overland during the summer and fall until heavy snow accumulation.

On horseback, the ride takes between 4 to 6 hours; by four-wheel-drive truck, 2-1/2 hours; and by helicopter, only 10 minutes. For your safety and in case of emergency, there is a heated helicopter landing-pad nearby, as in most other locations of the Ranch.

Should you opt for an overnight stay at the Upper Hideout as part of your Cowboy Adventure Package or similar arrangement, you will be assigned private quarters in very comfortable guest cabins.

Log cabins that have modern bathrooms and comfortable beds. The only difference from The Hideout lodgings being that you will be bedding down in tidy sleeping bags complete with fresh sheet sacks and pillowcases during your stay. All cabins have porches offering breathtaking views. On clear days, one can see the Rocky Mountains, some 120 miles away.

There is a cozy central lodge where folks congregate and meals are served. Called the Cook Shack, a name which belies its equally nice facilities. There's a wood stove and arm chairs, bathrooms, two large dining tables for hearty meals or enthustiastic card games. And a roomy deck that has picnic tables and porch umbrellas plus a wood-paneled ice chest stocked with your choice of cold drinks -- all with a fine view overlooking the refeshing pond. There's a fire pit where we gather around a campfire when no fire ban. And we keep a guitar and board games at the Upper Hideout for anyone who'd care to play.

Perhaps you'd prefer to book the sumptious, three-story owner's lodge for an especially private retreat or hunting trip, as the Flitners only helicopter in a few times a year.

However you decide to get to the Upper Hideout, you will find the journey in and out as rewarding as the stay itself. Wildlife is abundant and streams in the nearby canyons offer some good fishing. Here where deer graze around the compound and you can hear the coyotes howl during the night. We invite you to retreat to the secluded Upper Hideout for your next vacation.
