The Hideout is located in the beautiful Shell Valley of the Big Horn Basin, on the 100-year old Flitner Ranch, where five generations of the Flitner family have resided in tiny Shell, Wyoming, in the shadow of the Big Horn Mountains, since 1906. Just 110 miles east of Yellowstone Park, and 60 miles east of Cody, Wyoming, The Hideout offers gorgeous views in all directions, an oasis of peace and solitude in this fast-paced world.
From 4500 feet in the high-desert valley of salt sage, cactus, and prehistoric dinosaur discoveries, we climb the rocky canyons of White Creek and Trapper Creek, through wide-open range, to an elevation of over 10,000 feet in the Big Horn National Forest and the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area. The green alpine meadows, pine forests and crystal-clear mountain lakes and streams, home of the majestic elk, mule deer and the native Rainbow trout, are the perfect place to ride or relax on your western adventure.
Farming, ranching and raising Registered Quarter horses remain the core business of the Flitner family. Spread over 250,000 acres, with 1300 head of Black Angus mother cows, 400 head of yearlings and 200 horses, The Hideout at Flitner Ranch offers our guests many unique opportunities to ride with our cowboys, as they go about their daily work of operating a ranch of this size. There is always plenty to do and see, as the cattle range from their spring pasture at Heart Mountain and Whistle Creek, to summer range on Granite Pass, a distance of 100 miles. A maximum capacity of 32 guests allows everyone to participate as much as they desire. Our string of 65 guest horses, bred and raised for this challenging terrain, keep our guests safely mounted for a day of work in the saddle.
The Hideout provides upscale lodging in western-designed log cabins, with all the amenities of home: several lodges and cabins in the mountains, adapted to the authenticity, style and comfort you seek, provide an overnight stay for a change of pace. Our chefs prepare delicious, enticing gourmet dinners, the perfect end to a perfect day.
